What is A105 carbon steel?

ASTM A105 Forge Carbon Steel

ASTM A105 is the most commonly used carbon steel material grade that used to manufacture forge piping components such as flange and forged fittings of small diameter piping. This carbon steel material grade is used for ambient- and higher-temperature service in pressure systems.

ASTM A105 Chemical Composition
Carbon (max) 0.35
Manganese* 0.60-1.05
Phosphorus (max) 0.035
Sulfur (max) 0.040
Silicon 0.10-0.35
Copper (max) 0.40
Nickel (max) 0.40
Chromium (max) 0.30
Molybdenum (max) 0.12
Vanadium (max) 0.08
Niobium (max) 0.02
*Manganese can be up to 1.35% with decrease in Carbon

ASTM A105 Mechanical Properties

To confirm the strength and ductility of the material, tensile tests and hardness tests are performed on the specimen that cut out from the sample that heat-treated along with the final product. In the video below, you can see how the tensile test is performed on the test specimen.

Acceptable values of mechanical testing results are given in the table below.

Tensile Strength min. Yield Strength min. Elongation min. Reduction of Area, min. Hardness
MPa ksi MPa ksi % % HB

A105 material APPLICATIONS

  1. Flanges
  2. Valve Body
  3. Forged Fittings such as Elbow, Tee, Coupling, etc.
  4. Pressure vessel forge components such as a self-reinforced nozzle, nozzle neck, etc.

ASTM A105 Heat Treatment

Heat treatment is not required except for ASTM A 105 carbon steel forging. However, there are some exceptions that will require heat treatment to improve its mechanical properties for better application.

The typical heat treatment conducted for A105 carbon steel forgings includes annealing(A), normalizing(A), normalizing and tempering(NT), quenching and tempering(QT). Especially, normalizing at approximate 950°C for 2.5 hours is often required by many clients to eliminate possible internal stress in the forgings. These materials are usually marked as “ASTM A105N”.

Characteristics

  • A105 and A350-LF2 are standard specifications for forged carbon steel piping components. A105 for ambient and higher-temperature service; A350-LF2 for low-temperature service with Charpy V-Notch impact energy testing. Components include flanges, various fittings and valves.

Is A105 forged?

ASTM A105 steel bar is a steel specification for low carbon forged components.
